British Dressage Winter Championships 1999

Over 100 competitors made their way to Addington, Bucks to contest the Cliff Barnsby Preliminary, Blue Chip Feed Balancer Novice, Blue Chip Pro' Elementary and Cliff Barnsby Medium Winter Championships.

The Cliff Barnsby Preliminary Winter Championships set Saturday off to a fine start with 26 entries in the class and scores reaching the high 60's. Having only taken up dressage four months ago, Sharon Baldwin produced a polished performance and a score of 68.33% with her own Libro became the champion. Young Rider, Molly Robson and Waldfee took second place and Michelle Tipper and Montrose III third.

Two riders from Carl Hester's yard in Stow on the Wold showed true style by winning both sections in the Blue Chip Pro' Elementary Winter Championships. Leigh Edwards and her own 16.2hh dark bay mare Baroness III claimed the Championship title in the restricted section and Spencer Wilton on Mrs Christie's Fantastic Elastic took the open championship with 73.83%. Theirs was the highest score of the Winter Championships and they received rounds of applause from a joyous crowd. Fantastic Elastic, by Clavecimbel, was second in last year's Novice Winter Championships with Spencer.

Dionne Holding, the youngest competitor in the championships at 12 years old, took second place in the restricted section on her own 14.1hh Minkino with Jenny Stokes and Longdean Valentine in third. A well deserved second place in the open section went to Hannah Moody from Sheffield and Kwadraat and third place went to Igor Shechter and Persues.

Both Cliff Barnsby Saddlers and Blue Chip Feed Ltd enjoyed two packed days of dressage with enthusiastic crowds and fine weather. Their support of these championships was well rewarded with polished performances and high scores in all classes. Peter Petherick from Cliff Barnsby Saddlery presented a superb piece of bridlework to their Champions. Clare Blaskey of Blue Chip generously presented a rug and jacket, along with a free sack voucher for Blue Chip Or Blue Chip Pro' to the first three winners of each section and to make sure no one went home empty handed, everyone in the Novice or Elementary classes received a racing umbrella and baseball cap.
